The City or the Urban Sprawl

There is no clear and definite meaning for the Urban Sprawl but to get a starting point and overview i checked wikepedia firstly (alhthough i realise this isnt the most reliable source:

and according to Answers.com  it is "The unplanned, uncontrolled spreading of urban development into areas adjoining the edge of a city".

These are not related in any way to Photography so as far as i am concerned the Urban Sprawl encompasses towns and cities and the people within them depite this project being about places.

One image that comes to mind when i think about this is Paul Strand's Wall Street:

I went to London earlier this year and took a few photographs that i consider to show the Urban sprawl:

F7.1, 1/125 Sec, ISO 500
F5.6, 1/100 Sec, ISO 320

To me the urban sprawl is not just about the place but the people on the move, going to work, shopping, and all leading their lives, they contain a cornucopia of different people and without them, these places would not exist as they do.

F22, 1/125 Sec, ISO 250

I took this because i feel that this part of the brief also relates to technology and the advancement of our world which is reflected in our capital city by the vast buildings and the unavoidable modern machinery. I decided to experiment a little with this photograph and see what effects i could get by creating HDR.

This was done using the tone mapping which is new to Photoshop CS5 and creates a fairly subtle effect compared to the below example where i have increased the saturation on certain colours and taken the effect to the extreme. HDR doesnt suit every image and can spoil the natural look of some things but for me this is more about experimentation than anything as i am so new to HDR and Photoshop.

This was taken from the car park in Blackburn, i thought it was appropriate given the tall buildings, scaffolding and construction work in the background- although this cant really be seen from this one image.
